Even though Clairo began making her way into the music scene during the summer of 2017, I never really gave her music a listen. Of course, I’d heard “Pretty Girl” and “Flaming Hot Cheetos”, but I thought her music was another copy of what every bedroom artist was releasing—synth and lo-fi beats and shitty recording as part of playing into an aesthetic. The music video for “Flaming Hot Cheetos” wasn’t well-received, either. A friend of mine even mentioned that not even in a creative rut would she produce and create something like the video for “Flaming Hot Cheetos”. I never cared for her music until I heard “Bags”, a single off her new album, Immunity.

How Mitski Made Me Impulsively Get a Cowboy Tattoo
If you’re not familiar with Mitski, I suggest that you should be—or you may even know Mitski from Marceline’s cover of “Francis Forever” on Adventure Time. I’d describe her music as soul-hitting and heart-crushing and tear-jerking. But in the same vein, it’s her music that I want to put on when I want to dance around my room while getting ready and the music I want to play when I’m home making dinner out of food that’s been in my fridge for way too long. There’s a song for every emotion—I can’t even begin to understand how she does it.
